RALLY OF THE MIDLANDS
The Hinckley based Rally of the Midlands
took place last weekend with the 55 crews competing at
various venues which included a short burst through the
town centre on Friday evening after two laps of the Mallory
racing circuit.
The action continued in the blistering heat
on Saturday and Sunday with competitive action taking
place at MIRA, the motor industry testing ground, Mallory
Park, Merevale and Arbury Hall stately homes, and Bramcote
Army barracks.
Only 28 of the original starters finished
the gruelling event, the main causes of retirement being
mechanical failure, including blown engines due undoubtedly
to the excessive heat.
After their recent win in the area on the
D’Isis Stages Rally, Stirling’s Tom Morris
and Neil Chambers brought the Metro 6R4 home in 1st place
O/A after over 90 miles of action.
After a disappointing start to the event
they managed to claw back lost time and beat Andrew Barker
and Steve Mort in the Ford Focus into second place, by
over 1 minute.
The only Ludlow Castle Motor Club crew to
make the trip to Hinckley were Richard Davies and Gareth
Wilcox.
They had a fairly trouble free day in their
Mark 2 Ford Escort finishing 14th O/A and first in Class.
This was an excellent result for Richard
and Gareth who are competing in the Jam Motorsport Heart
of England Rally Championship, of which this event was
the 5th round.
This result should mean that they maintain
their HOE Championship Class lead.
The next round of the HOE Championship will
be the Llandovery based Quinton Stages on July 7th.
